NEW YORK -- A new study says consumers could have saved more than 20 billion dollars last year by using generic drugs.
The study by pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts estimates that if generic drug use doesn't increase that 24 billion dollars in savings will be lost this year and 25 billion next year.
Consumers pay lower co-payments for generics, saving ten dollars or more per prescription by forgoing a brand name medicine.
The study looked at six major classes of drugs and was based on a sample of roughly three million Express Scripts commercial members.
