A new study says consumers could have saved more than $20 billion last year by using generic drugs.
The study by pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts estimates that if generic drug use doesn't increase that $24 billion in savings will be lost this year and $25 billion next year.
It also says that a generic drug costs about $60 less, on average, for a monthly prescription than a brand name medicine.
Consumers pay lower co-payments for generics, saving ten dollars or more per prescription by forgoing a brand name medicine.
The study looked at six major classes of drugs and was based on a sample of roughly three million Express Scripts commercial members.
Government programs such as Medicaid are not included in the study.
