WATERVILLE -- Dana Hills is matter-of-fact about why she works in an exotic-rubdown parlor. It helps pay the bills.
"Raising kids by yourself is not easy," she said. Hills, 29 and the mother of three children, has worked at Gentleman's Choice about two years.
The business is located at 90 Main St. downtown, above CVS pharmacy. Owner Fred Horne last month moved the parlor from College Avenue, where it was located across the street from the former Marden's Surplus & Salvage.
Hills says men make appointments by telephone or just come in. A man gets to choose which woman he wants. Whichever one is chosen goes into one of four rooms with him. Depending on what he wants, she gives him a rubdown -- using oils and lotions -- of his back, legs, feet, chest and head, she said.
Prices vary according to how long the session is, and what state of dress -- or undress -- he wants her to be in. For instance, for a half-hour session, she will be topless for $40; for $60 she'll wear only a G-string; for $80 she will be nude; and for $100 she'll perform an erotic show.
Sometimes the men want to talk, she said. They talk about a wide range of topics, from snowmobiling to hunting, racing or travel.
Hills says there are no sex acts involved in the service.
"Absolutely no full-service," she said. "If you do, you are fired on the spot."
She pays a rental fee of $10 a half-hour and $20 an hour to Gentleman's Choice owner Fred Horne. She also pays a facility fee of $10 a day, which includes use of laundry services. Each rubdown table has a sheet and towels and washcloths.
Hills said she works at a grocery store, too, and is going to college, where she is studying accounting. Working at Gentleman's Choice helps support her children -- something their fathers are not good at, she said. Hills had her first child at age 16.
"I've got two child-support orders on two of my children," she said. "One of them (the fathers) has never paid a penny. On Monday (last week), I got the first payment -- $50 -- in 51Ú2 years. The other one is supposed to pay $25 a week, and every three months I get a letter from the state and they tell me he hasn't paid."
She said she has twice taken fathers to court, with no results.
This is the first time she has worked in a rubdown parlor, she said. She saw the job advertised in the newspaper.
"I used to be a dancer when I was younger," she said. "I did exotic dancing, in Arizona and Boston."
Hills said she is from Arizona and has lived in Maine about three years. Her parents are dead, so she does not mind using her real name, something the other women at Gentleman's Choice will not do for fear they will lose their other jobs or embarrass family members.
