Faced with uncertainty regarding both the amount of flu vaccine available to purchase and the date it could be delivered to campus, the Student Health Service (SHS) regrets it will not conduct a flu vaccine clinic this year.
Employees, retirees and students, particularly those in the high-risk category, are encouraged to pursue other means of obtaining a flu shot.
After contacting several suppliers last spring, the SHS pharmacy supervisor finally located doses of flu vaccine to reserve for Illinois State, but recently learned the planned delivery date of late October has been pushed into November or later which makes scheduling uncertain due to Thanksgiving break and the end of the semester. News media have reported that less flu vaccine will be shipped this year, making the final amount SHS receives in doubt. Another factor contributing to the ambiguity regarding the amount of vaccine that could be received by the Student Health Service is the emphasis on high-risk groups and the elderly.
Rather than scheduling a flu vaccine clinic and having to cancel it or not be able to provide vaccine for all those who want it, the Student Health Service decided to not conduct the clinic this year. By making the decision now, people will be able to obtain a flu vaccine elsewhere in a timely manner.
